Lonely Planet: Ultimate Travel

Our List of the 500 Best Places to SEE... Ranked

First Edition published on August 2015

Below is a list of places I visited that's part of the first edition and a short excerpt on why it's included on the list.

106. Niagara Falls

A Thunderous Force of Nature

Jomar and I visited the Niagara Falls October 2022.

CANADA // Niagara might not be the tallest waterfall in the world, nor the widest, but it's undoubtedly the world's most well known and, in terms of sheer volume, there's nothing like it - more than a million bathtubs of water plummet downwards every second.

187. Gardens by the Bay

The Botanic Garden of the Future

We visited the Gardens by the Bay last July 2012.

SINGAPORE // This 101-hectare fantasyland of space-age bio-domes and whimsical sculputures is simply unmissable. Singapore's show-stopping green space has a Flower Dome replicating the dry Mediterranean climate, and a Cloud Forest with a waterfall, but it's hard to trump the huge vertical gardens known as Supertrees, six of which are joined by a skyway with knockout city views.

194. Changdeokgung Palace

Seoul's Most Regal Residence

Jomar and I with our happy friends visited Changdeokgung Palace March 2014.

SOUTH KOREA // Principles of feng-shui dictate the architecture at this Joseon palace, adopted as the seat of the Korean royal family after the Japanese destroyed te original in 1590s.

242. Borobudur

Buddha's Mega Monument

We visited Borobudur last June 2013.

INDONESIA // The monument's tiered quadrant of bell-like strctures has survive Gunung Merapi's eruptions, terrorist bombs, and the 2006 earthquake to remain as enigmatic and as beautiful as it must have been 1200 years ago. Nearly 1500 narrative relief panels on the terraces illustrate Buddhist teachings and tales, while 432 Buddha images sit contemplatively in chambers on the terraces.

342. N Seoul Tower

Beloved Landmark Tower

We visited N Seoul Tower last March 2014.

SOUTH KOREA // As iconic as kimchi, the spindle of N Seoul Tower teeters over Seoul, offering panoramic but hazy views of the immense metropolis. It's the star attraction of Namsan mountain, beloved by locals as a place for exercise, peaceful contemplation and hanging out with loved ones; thousands of padlocks festooned around the tower's railings are inscribed with lovers' names.
