Visiting the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC

I never knew how many museums and art galleries are in Metro Vancouver, yet as I was searching for places to visit near Vancouver, many museums that I didn't know existed came up. One of which is the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC.

My younger sister graduated from UBC, but Jomar and I have only been there together once when we went to explore the Museum of Anthropology.

For our local exploration today, we spent three hours at Beaty Biodiversity Museum.

The famous blue whale skeleton.

One section of the Cowan Tetrapod Collection

Below are the six sections inside the Beaty Biodiversity Museum.
  1. Cowan Tetrapod Collection - There are a lot of specimens of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and so much more.
  2. The Herbarium - This section has an organized collection of preserved plants, algae, lichens, and fungi.
  3. The Marine Invertebrate Collection - In this section, we saw sponges (I called it inspiration for Spongebob), sea jellies, marine worms, crustaceans, clams (there was a Manila Clam on display!), octopuses, sea stars (Patrick star!), marine worms, and sea squirts. Hubby laughed at me when I saw the seahorse - I didn't know they were real. I thought they were like unicorns. They are too good to be true.
  4. The Spencer Entomological Collection - Here, we saw all sorts of insects, arachnids, and terrestrial invertebrates. Butterflies, dragonflies, spiders, and everything else in between are all here.
  5. The Fish Collection - Lots and lots of fish and so many varieties of salmon.
  6. The Fossil Collection - This is my favourite part of the museum - there's a giant dinosaur footprint hanging from the back wall, and you're allowed to touch it! I had goosebumps just touching it.
After going through the whole museum, we had lunch at Kinton Ramen. Then, we walked along Main Mall so that hubby could see the Clock Tower, the UBC Flag Pole, and we ended our walk at the Rose Garden (which has no roses because it's still winter).

I can't wait to come back in Spring and enjoy the many gardens in UBC. I felt a bit sad about being unable to travel, but accomplishing this field trip at UBC today and seeing all the other places we can visit made the blues disappear.
